How to Apply

Application Process

Thank you for your interest in the MEng(S) degree. We look forward to receiving your application.

Here are the five steps toward applying to join our programme:

Step 1

Make sure you meet the admission requirements

An undergraduate engineering degree (BEng / BSc) in engineering (e.g. civil, mechanical, electrical or chemical) with an average of 60% is typically required for admission. An ECSA-approved BTech with an average above 70% will be considered, possibly following additional studies.

If you have questions about these, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Step 2

If possible attend one of our virtual open days.

Step 3

Apply online to the university

All postgraduate applicants must apply online at the following address:  www.sun.ac.za/pgstudies

Select the degree option: “MEng(Civil Engineering) Structured Fire” with the associated (Full time) or (Part time) option. The degree option means you are doing the coursework-based fire engineering masters degree, MEng(S), hosted by the Department of Civil Engineering.

  • Note: If when registering the “MEng(Civil Engineering) Structured Fire” option is not yet available then select “MEng(Civil Engineering) Structural”. Our Department will manually update your registration once the new Fire option has been loaded.
  • For masters research students select “MEng(Civil Engineering) Research Fire”.
  • For doctoral students select the Programme Type as “Doctoral” and the Programme as “PhD (Civil Engineering)”.

Submit the Departmental Application form

  • Download the Departmental application form, CIVPG01
  • Complete the form. Select the “Discipline” as “Fire engineering” on the form.
  • Upload this form with your application on SUN Student.

Step 4

Review of your application

Your application will be reviewed by the university and our Department. International students’ applications need to first be reviewed by the international office which requires additional time. Once your application has been reviewed the result will be communicated to you.

Step 5

Registration

You will receive confirmation from the University if your formal application has been successful. We will also contact you to welcome you to the 2024 MEng programme. Finally, we will then send you the joining instructions, details about the schedule for 2024 and required pre-readings and assignments.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about the application process.
